Le souvenir Français has its roots in Alsace and Lorraine occupied since 1870, a pious custom had been established in many places : on the "day of the dead" (1st November), girls in traditional dress bloom war graves of their villages, sliding furtively a tricolor cockarde on a French graves, testimony of their memories and their hopes. In 1872, Mr. NIESSEN, an Alsatian Professor found poorly maintained graves of French soldiers and decided to remedy. In 1887, in Neuilly sur Seine, he founded the national association of "Souvenir Francais", which was recognized as a public utility by decree of 1st February 1906.
