Route Joffre was built during the first world war to supply the front Vieil-Armand and provide communications between the valleys of the Thur and Doller. During WWII, the Route Joffre finds his military role by providing access to Thann. At the top of the neck of Hundsruck, the monument of the 1st Battalion of Shock honors the men who, in November 1944, fought in these places and liberated the town of Bourbach-le-Haut.
